Convergys: From Cincinnati to the Philippines

Just thought of sharing this news about Convergys that was published here:

Convergys hasn’t added jobs in Cincinnati, but it has in other parts of the country and overseas. The company, whose main business is operating call centers, has hired workers at many of its call center sites in the U.S. and other countries.

It’s targeted the Philippines in particular for job growth, as one-third of its worldwide call center workforce, about 20,000 people, now work in the Southeast Asian country, making Convergys one of the largest employers there.

Convergys hired thousands in the island nation, even during the recession. During 2009, as unemployment rose above 9 percent in Greater Cincinnati, the company opened five new call centers in the Philippines, bringing its total to 12, and hiring thousands to staff them.

“We are a client-driven company, and we place client programs in the geographies where they feel they will best be served,” Williams said. “Many of our clients are served in multiple geographies based on the type of support they need for various segments of their business.”

Many clients of Convergys and other outsourcing companies request that their work be done in the Philippines because it’s so much cheaper, said Matthew McCormack, who follows the industry for BGB Securities in Arlington, Va. Call center agents earn about $2.50 an hour in the Philippines, compared to about $10 an hour in the U.S., he said.

This is indeed a great news to Filipinos especially to those who want to work in the call center. Just remember to be ready physically, emotionally, intellectually and spiritually because call center life is really fun yet challenging.
