Call Center Shutters: Centerpoint and Wells Fargo

by Call Center Gal on May 29, 2010

Just had a browse over some call center news today and I just found out about another two call center shutters. Yes, that is not a great news to hear over the weekend considering the early reports of Sallie Mae Call Center losing 500 jobs as well as Convergys Call Center near Jefferson and Osuna slashed a lot of call center employees off their jobs as well.

Here’s the latest addition to the roster.

A call center that deals with ‘As seen on TV‘ calls slashed 120 call center jobs last week.

CenterPoint’s CEO and President Michael McNaboe told News 13 Thursday night that the company was faced with a “very tough” choice and had to end operations immediately Thursday.

Before breaking the news to employees as they gathered inside, McNaboe says the decision was made to call in two police officers – one from Kittery and one from Eliot – to be on standby. “(With) that number of people at the same time hearing the bad news (it was) just a smart thing to do,” said McNaboe, who also stresses a vast majority of the employees handled the news very well and there were no incidents to report.

Another call center that can’t stay afloat is the Wells Fargo Call Center at Perkins Rowe, leaving approximately 70 call center employees jobless after June 28.

Spokeswoman Lara Underhill said workers were notified Tuesday that their last day will be June 28. She said severance packages are being offered and the company is working to help move willing employees to other call centers out of state or place them, if their skills merit, in Wells Fargo’s Home Mortgage, Financial and Advisors offices locally. She said the company has set up a career services site to help laid-off employees find other work. The closure is part of Wells Fargo’s broader consolidation of redundant offices in the wake of its acquisition of Wachovia.

This is really heart breaking especially for those who only regard this job as their only source of income. I wish that they find another call center job right away.
