I’m not sure if there’s a scientific explanation to this, but I usually get sleepy after eating a meal that has rice in it. Especially when I’m in the office and it’s lunch time (whether on morning or night shift), after eating a rice meal I would expect to feel drowsy an hour later. Could it be the carbohydrates? I’m not sure.
I did a little experiment a while back by not eating rice for my lunch. And I noticed that I was much more alert right after noon, and that I stopped feeling sleepy. A couple of times I still felt slow and my eyelids would drop, but it was more tolerable than the usual.
The good thing about this is that I could go on a diet because of my eliminating the rice from my lunch. I still eat, of course, but this time, because there’s no rice, there are less calories that I will eat. I am no dietitian and no health buff either, but I believe there is nothing wrong with this kind of lunch. No rice? A lot of people are doing that. And because it keeps me awake especially during what’s supposed to be is siesta time, I might actually give it a try for a longer period of time.

my classmates and i have also asked that same question “why we feel sleepy after eating a meal?”
Our clinical instructor said that glucose is needed by our brain to keep it functioning well, and because of the food we ingested, more of the glucose goes into our stomach after a meal to digest the food that we have taken. in a hypoglycemic, loss of consciousness is common because there is no glucose to stimulate the brain…
