Why the Philippines, and not India, is a Better Call Center Hub

by Call Center Gal on December 29, 2009

I have a few reasons as to why the Philippines is the better call center destination compared to India. Here are at the top of my mind:

1. We have a more neutral accent.
The Indian accent is very hard to remove even after weeks or months of training. Filipinos, on the other hand, has the natural gift of the tongue. Meaning, we can easily learn a new accent.

2. We are more familiar with the American culture.
The United States is the largest market for BPO services. Because of this, and the Philippines long history of association with the U.S., Filipinos has better understanding of how the American culture works. In fact, most U.S. customs and culture are not that too different from that of the Filipinos.

3. There is less operating costs.
I know of Indian call centers having to worry about transporting their employees from far and hard to reach villages just to get them to the office. Some call centers even have to worry about the local strife or violence that are happening in some Indian locales that getting their employees to work require added transportation and even security.

4. We have a better telecommunications infrastructure.
This is an argument that a friend of mine suggested. It is thanks to the telecommunications networks, hardware etc. that the United States forces laid down for us while they still had bases here.

5. We have higher quality of voice skills.
This is what most foreign call center executives have claimed about the skills of Filipinos for this industry. It is not just the accent. It is also with the way Filipinos are very much comfortable of speaking in English and in holding a conversation with a native English speaker.

I agree with you, maam. I’ve been in the call center industry for almost 6 years now and I really say that we can brag about how we, filipinos, perform.

I remembered my professor telling us about India’s call center industry progression: India has a more diplomatic and investor-friendly business scheme; unlike the Philippines whose bureaucratic structure turns foreign investors off.

We have everything, if not only the system. :(

*Happy holidays!
