Three Reasons for Hiring Mothers as Call Center Agents

by admin on May 10, 2009

I’ve been working in the call center industry for over seven years now, and I notice how the workforce would consist more of women than men. I don’t know why, but as I did a lot of call center training, I also noticed the growing number of moms joining this lucrative industry.

This has raised my curiosity, especially when they introduce themselves as moms during the first training day. Little by little, I figured why Moms can be a good applicant as a call center agents.

Moms pay a lot of attention to details

They may have some challenges on how to go with learning a lot of things (systems training, soft skills and product training) but you can count on these moms to deliver well once they hit the floor and take calls. They are known to take and stick a lot of notes on their workstations because they don’t want to miss anything they just learned in the training.

Moms love to educate when situations call for it

You all know this. At home, moms love to teach us on how to do things when we were young. This is something that they bring on their calls. Mom call center agents would not get tired of reminding their customers on how to do things better next time.

Moms generally extends more of their patience with everyone

Customers can be very emotionally challenging at times and it only takes a patient agent to survive the call, all while doing multi-tasking.

So those were my observations. How about you? Have you known mothers who work in a call center? What were your observations?

To all Moms who worked hard to make ends meet and maintain a family, Happy Mother’s Day! :)

My wife and my sister is working in a call center. And I also hove friends who are mother who work in various call center.

One thing that I observed to them is they are really dedicated in their work as they know that their salary is big help in their family finances. They also make it a point to spend quality time with their family as we all know that most of them have shifting schedule thus they are very conscious in their time management.

Hi Nhil, I wanted to leave a comment in your other blog regarding your mother’s day post about your mom, but if i click on the post comment, it does not do anything, maybe the comment section does not work?

I agree with you about moms being patient, and moms as great multi-tasker, it is so much challenge to be a mom, and they do really great job.

Great post, and all great reasons to hire moms. It is a tough job market right now, and we all must market ourselves to employers.

Hi Nhil, on mom and multi-tasking –I agree. I like it when you said that call center moms have a habit of reminding customers to do it the proper way next time. I guess it is second nature to moms to do this or talk this way (teehee) :)

I agree with your post.it’s a good thing also that the call center industry doesn’t discriminate applicants as to age, marital status,or whether you’re a mom or what.most industries normally set a minimum age requirement and sadly,a lot of companies prefer single and/or non-parent applicants.

My only concern is, will a mom have the time to work like that? Taking care of a baby and the whole family is already big work. :)

I agree, I have seen a lot of what I call “mom” agents, and I have indeed noticed how they are more focused, more patient and work harder compared to other agents. The call center industry ought to get more people with these traits in the business.
